Ex-Combatant Women and Conflict Transformation

Universidad del Valle Press – article “Ex-Combatant Women and Conflict Transformation: Paradoxes of Peacebuilding in the Armed Struggle” published in the journal La manzana de la discordia [The Apple of Discord].

By Andrea Marcela Barrera Téllez

Women’s participation in the Colombian armed conflict as combatants is often an unknown social phenomenon. Moreover, the political motivation at the heart such activism appears invisible. This article explores the political motivation of women’s militancy in insurgent armed groups and their participation in the armed struggle in the country. Special attention is paid to the voices, stories, reflections and analyses of ex-combatants who offer new perspectives on the relationship between war, armed struggle, conflict transformation and peace.
