Government of Canada announces expert advisory group on online safety

Today, the Honorable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage, and David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced the creation of a new Expert Advisory Panel on Online Safety on which our co-holders Ghayda Hassan and David Morin were selected. This is another step in the development of legislation to combat harmful content online.

The Expert Advisory Group will be tasked with providing advice on a legislative and regulatory framework to best address harmful content online. The panel is comprised of experts and practitioners from across Canada who will bring their knowledge and experience in a variety of fields to Canada.

The Expert Advisory Group will hold nine workshops to discuss the various components of a legislative and regulatory framework for online safety. It will also participate in other meetings with stakeholders, including digital platforms. The work of the Expert Advisory Group will be open and transparent. Its terms of reference, accompanying documents for each session and unattributed summaries of all sessions and discussions will be made public. All Canadians can follow the progress of discussions on this important issue that affects everyone.
